What to expect as a house owner in first 6 months

It’s been six months since we moved into this house, and the journey has been very diverse. I never thought we could do so many things in such a short time. I figured to compose a list of things we have done so far. So maybe some future house owners would know what it is like to start living in the house and what to expect. I am starting from the first things we did to the things we did most recently. So here it goes:

  • Signed a contracts with the electricity, garbage cleanup service, internet service provider etc companies.
  • Learned the house, which switches switch what appliances by trial and error and read the house schemes.
  • Moved stuff from Triin’s place to the house multiple times with only the space in the car saloon because we did not have access to the cart.
  • Moved my stuff from the capital to the new house with friends.
  • Ordered bunch of stuff, so many in fact that we had like couriers two weeks in a row everyday
  • Assembled living room furniture with some friends.
  • Assembled office room furniture.
  • Learned how to install washing machine.
  • Installed washing machine and the dryer.
  • Digged holes to total of 200 trees and planted those, some with friends some with Triin.
  • Covered all those trees recently with nets so deers won’t eat them.
  • Learned what oil goes to lawn-mower and set it up.
  • Installed new flower amps to the side of the house.
  • We installed with Triin’s uncle living-, bed- and officeroom lamps.
  • Washed the sauna boardings.
  • Filled many cracks in the wall with silicon so there would be a little less wind coming through wall electrical plugs. Going to have to take a look further on that topic in near future.

  • Learned how to install & installed shower curtain and drill holes to stone wall and screw stuff to it.
  • Installed shower curtain.
  • Set up a hook for the garden hose.
  • We stained the whole terrace (about 60 square meters).
  • Asked around who installed the geothermal heating system to the house so we could order once a year maintenance to it.
  • Triin fixed one of the chairs which looked pretty new but only had seat base broken.
  • Shot some screws to some faccade boards which were a bit off the wall.
  • Fixed wardrobe slat in the guests room.
  • Organized our clothes and other stuff after moving was done.
  • Glued one of the kitchen slats back on to the cupboard.
  • Installed mosquito nets to some of the doors which lead to terrace.
  • Organized and threw away some stuff under the shelter, on the side of the house.
  • Removed old glues stains off the wall from saunas shower room and installed new hooks.
  • Re-painted old window frames.
  • Tried to fix air conditioner on my own by learning from the internet, eventually figured I do not have the equiptment to do whats required for the fix.
  • Cleaned air conditioner filters.
  • Ordered repair man to fix the air conditioner.
  • Installed new gaskets to most of the doors.
  • Oiled some of the door inges.
  • Fixed guestsroom tap pressure.
  • Fixed a bit middle floor’s shower room tap pressure.
  • Bought some new rope to old rope curtains and replaced the rope.
  • Hosted midsummer’s day festival with friends.
  • Fetched some antique bedside tables and drawers.
  • Painted some parts of the outer wall and balcony which really had a need for some new paint.
  • Ordered a chimney sweeper.
  • Bought new outlet cover and installed it so it wouldn’t be exposed if someone goes to touch it.
  • Repainted the well house with neighbors.
  • Helped parents to build garden house near the seaside summer cottage.
  • We mowed a lot of lawn (mowing lawn for the entire garden takes about 15km walking distance – measured with gps once).
  • Asked electric company to what needs to be done to install solar panels.
  • Ordered calculation of roof weight structure.
  • Re-attached some boards which were sawwed off.
  • Replaced light bulbs in kitchen, corridor and guestsroom which burnt out.
  • Stained swing and climbing structures.
  • Sealed closed terrace door’s window frames with film so snow would not fall in winter.
  • Learned how to fix bicycle gears, breaks and such.
  • Fixed Triin’s bicycle gears, breaks and saddle.
  • Installed new fireplace tin.
  • Threw about 10 house warming parties with different kinds of family and friend groups.

And also all the everyday stuff plus 8to5 job, our own company’s clients and their project related work. In conclusion it was a lot of work and very tireing but learned a lot from it and now when the days are getting shorter we can finally enjoy and rest more time indoors.
